Vertigo VSC-2
Has anyone here used one? Any thoughts on how it sounded?
Aha, so the VCA is gold...
I think they found a way around that.
"The VSC-2 plug-in captures all the fine nuances of
this 6,000$ flagship VCA compressor."
(Mind you, for all I know it's the greatest audio tool since the soldering iron.)
This is a great compressor. I had one hear for about 6 months... build quality is great, some of the best I've ever seen. Tactile function is great, loved the feel of everything. Sound is great for a VCA based compressor, probably the best VCA comp I've experienced.
Sound wise it is very similar with the API2500 but seems to beat it out by just a hair. Only thing wrong with it I felt was it was a bit overpriced for what it does. I tried to justify it (for 4500.00) but in the end went with the API 2500 as I felt it was a little bit more versatile, the sound was so close and the price was right.
If money was no object I think I would have went with this compressor.
Tried the plug in, didn't feel compelled to buy.
Larry - thanks for the info. Interesting that you felt it close to the 2500, I didn't get along with that box the one time I tried it out. They retail for closer to $6K now.
Love the VSC-2... we got one on demo a couple of years ago and couldn't let it go. It certainly does what the other options (STC-8, LTD-2s, Manley Vari-Mu) don't. Snappy, versatile and very clean.
I have listened to the VSC-2 on the musikmesse floor and even though all the noise and everything it was the most impressive thing I've listened there.
Can't say the same about the plug-in, didn't like it at all!
McSnare had it before me... so maybe he'll chime in.
6K... wow, but then I bought my STC8M for 3500.00 and I see they are up to 6K and I bought my GML 9500 for 8K and the are up to 11.5K. Wish I could raise my prices like these guys do... instead I'm charging less now than 10 years ago.
I reviewed the hardware when it first came out, and thought it excellent if pricey; it has a subtle sheen to the sound which may or may not help depending on what you're working on. In the VCA world the Foote does what I need and is very neutral-sounding.
I tried the VSC-2 plug, but wouldn't use it for mastering - Vertigo confirmed my feeling that it was aimed more at the track/mix end of things.
Thanks for the input Nigel.
The Vertigo compressor is great.
