One workflow issue I've encountered recently in testing these programs has to do with spacing.

I've had a number of clients who have very specific ideas about timing and crossfades, and also the timing when doing a re-release where the resultant master's timing must be identical to the original release.

In these cases they've sent small sound clips of the intermediary timing, which I line up in my DAW until they are absolutely sample accurate, then export the entire side (or full album) as a contiguous file and then insert the track markers.

None of the programs I've tried seem to allow the overlay of a second channel of audio, which is what I would need to do this as an out-of-DAW experience.

My current method is working fine but I wanted to ask how any of you handle this issue with these programs (obviously I know that full on DAWs like Sonic Solutions, etc allow multiple tracks, etc).

Triumph is definitely capable of this:  put the example snippet on its own layer, adjust main layer to match (layers have transparency so you can see when you're aligned).  Not as easy as actual multitrack editing, but it does work.

Pretty sure you can do side by side track layout in Hofa as well, ..even though I haven't tried it yet.
I think the 2 separate tracks are mainly for cross fading, but seems you could lay a mock-up in there and
adjust the spacing on the other and then delete the mock-up and then fine tune the markers.

I get the client who can be super particular about spacing as well and have always been able to figure a work around
for getting it right, like preparing in a daw or using a stop watch, etc.
Just never found something that I've felt comfortable with that does it all.

"the only thing that I miss from the CD Architect amd Waveburner days is the ability to zoom in on the file's overview and adjust the spacing by dragging the files."

You should be able to do that with Hofa

I'll just de-lurk here for a minute to note that a major update to Hofa CD Burn & DDP is imminent. When I spoke with Gregor at Hofa recently he said they were expecting to release this in March. This should include the ability to output 24bit files.

Thought you might want to be aware of this before purchasing.

HOFA also sent out an email today to help tease the new update:

Successor to CD-Burn & DDP in sightCD-Burn.DDP.MasterTo begin with:
Anyone who buys the well-tried CD-Burn & DDP now will get the upgrade for free as soon as the new CD-Burn.DDP.Master is available!
We expect the release in May 2017.To increase the anticipation - here are some of the new features:

  • Import and export of arbitrary sample rates and bit resolutions
  • Multi-CD projects (e.g. for long audiobooks)
  • All HOFA IQ-Plugins are accessible for free and can be automated.
  • Extended export functionality e.g. for vinyl releases and online distribution
  • Import of audio CDs as DDP images
  • Compilation of multi-session CDs
  • Direct connection to HOFA DDP Player Maker
  • And many more new functions ...

Hi Gregg,

I moved across from Sonoris a year or so ago due to stability issues I was having. Hofa has been rock solid.

I just had two clients ask where the embedded DDP player was. I guess it's time to get one. From the HOFA website it doesn't look like DDP Player Maker will generate a DDP. Correct? It looks like you would need CD-Burn and DDP. Correct? If i keep using Sonoris DDP Creator I think I only need DDP Player Maker.

Sorry for not making it clearer. I've been using Sonoris DDP Creator for years. Last week I bought the HOFA DDP Player Maker so that I could start including a player for clients (it's much cheaper than the Sonoris Player). Now with the new version of HOFA CD-Burn & DDP announced, I'm thinking of completely jumping ship from Sonoris (Creator) and HOFA (embedded Player), to an all-in-one HOFA solution. But, I am worried about the reliability of HOFA vs. Sonoris, as Sonoris has a very good track record for me, and for many others it seems. The HOFA programs seem more user friendly (for me and clients), and are quite a bit cheaper.

Yes. DDP Player Maker only generates the DDP Player for cleitns. It needs to work from an existing DDP file set. You can create the DDP with Sonoris and then use DDP Player Maker to generete the player. DDP Player Maker even zips the DDP folder for you which saves a step.

Then just uplaod the zip to a file sharing service/FTP and send your clients info how how to downlaod the zip and use the embeded player and you should be good to go.

It sounds like the upcoming update to HOFA CD Burn & DDP may combine or bridge the gap between HOFA CD Burn & DDP and DDP Player Maker. We shall see.

I tried the Hofa plugin, nice idea, seriously buggy though...

Using the Plugin in Logic Pro 10.3.1

Text fields cannot be copied and pasted into the program, must be typed in manually
If you double click on a text field, it deletes any entered text.

After entering all the ISRC and Track Names manually, I entered the name of the album in the “Album Title” box for the first song, and when I double clicked the entered name if duplicated it to every “Album Title” box while simultaneously deleting the ISRC codes and Track Names I had entered.

Then it crashed Logic entirely...

I didn't dig Hofa. I pitch/catch in Pro Tools. Sequence/fade/create DDPs in DSP Quattro, and then use the Sonoris OEM DDP_Player app to send clients their projects. Seems to cover everything without a ton of headache.

Are you guys using Macs? I haven't had any stability problems with Sonoris on windoze.

In my case I'm sure the issues I had with DDP Creator had everything to do with the idiosyncrasies of my particular DAW: XP (you read that right). Still use Sonoris to check DDPs though.

Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...
