This article is a year old, but I hadn't heard about this until now. D. Dunn's nephew supposedly involved in reopening this building at 2272 Deadrick in Memphis.

Anyone heard about it?  I know that I really loved some of the records done at the old Easley-McCain (which is also now apparently open again, somewhere else?) like Sonic Youth "Washing Machine," etc.

Never liked that place.

Fraught with problems and ineptitude from its inception.

Terrible location.

Grisanti's long gone anyway.

Perfect time to be opening such a place there, so much music business to call upon.

Yeah, certainly not the best location!

I think it's mighty weird to call a studio in memphis "American," regardless of what the connection to the original was.

Easley-McCain has a facebook page as well.  Lots of cool old pics of bands from the '80s and early '90s that used to play at the Antenna club (Grifters, DDT, etc.) -- the studio's main clientele before Pavement, Sonic Youth, Jeff Buckley, etc. started making records there.

Tons of pictures of an old Auditronics 501 "Son of 36 grand" desk.  Not sure how long that stayed there, or what replaced it.

American Recording Studio

I hope this helps to undeerstand why the name is American Recording studio . ARS is back to the orginal starting point , Don Crews founder of Penthouse Records and then a new partnership was formed after Chips left STAX . They changed the name in 1964 of the Thomas street Location to American Sound Studios AKA" AMERICAN RECORDING STUDIOS " when ONYX was purchased in Nov !968 by Don & Chips it was named American Recording East and a full page ad in Billboard Magazine was published with both studios pictured as they were turning out the hits   . It was pretty simple for us to preserve the annex east Landmark, considering that American North is now demolished and a Dollar store sits in its place . ONYX/ AMERICAN EAST is the only Studio that was built and designed to be a recording studio from the ground up in Memphis it has been contracted by just about every major & Indie label in the world over the past 50 years. Chips & Don both deserve to be in the Rock & Roll Hall of fame , they also deserve Grammy Lifetime achivement awards since both passing in 2016 it is way overdue ,,They had some of the best hit records ever to come out of there hard work AMERICAN N & ONYX AMERICAN EAST was the only studio that had two locations due to there massive success. ONYX/ AMERICAN RECORDING STUDIO EAST  is not a converted office building or in a strip center etc. It's a one of a kind in Memphis, to have been a" BluePrinted Studio " designed with flaoted floors on coil springs, 2 foot thick walls & Stereo Echo chambers and much more .. I knew Chips from the time I was born and reached out to him about the name rights as well as Erick Crews ( Don's Son ) and that is very Important to us save this landmark of Memphis Music.. All were thrilled that the studio was being saved and would preserve their history and hard work of not only themselves but other produceers and operators of 2272 Deadrick St, Don came over with Erick and I will never forget that day in 2010 to have Don tell his storys about the history ..This is the only part of ARS that was saved due to American North being demolished 1989 .. Easley McCain did a great job with the studio and also left a incredible bio of the years when they were there .. The Fire in the control room in 2005 preetty much clossed them  down until they could re structure..The Studio was owned by another company when fire occured ,  When all of the Insurance companys had settled it was sold on the court house steps to a company who wanted to re purpose the studio. I contacted them after they could not get a U&O ( use occupancy) from code enforcement , Then it was listed by a real estate company for 250K .. The building needed everrything from A to Z to put it back to the orginal studio and looks and sounds as good as any studio in the world .. some people talk about the location is bad on this thread ??  I can tell you that we have never had any problems or issues there since the restoration & re opening after being here for 10 years . Unfortunatly crime does not discriminate ! My cousin was car jacked and Kid Napped from another world famous studio in Mphs , In beautiful Overton Square and one of my favorite studios and  Memphis Sounds ( Kiva ) was burned down by it's Owner ?? according to news reports ?. It takes a hellva alot faith to run a real studio in this day and time , Im glad you addresed this topic of the name some are confused not to many ever bring it up, It took me 4 years to see this post ,so I thought would address in detail as best possible .. I have grown up in the music buisness on both sides of my family from Paramount, Waner Bros, King , Gulf Western & STAX .. This took a ton of effort to restore this amazing studio and looking at some the other comments on this thread by other people who want to hide behind B.S names or Compass Pointe Studio post wow , I hope that you dont make this a best practice , do you talk about bands and artists you record this way , Good luck to you , honestly this kind of mind set has hurt the Memphis Music Buisness with calling another studio a slog by Gold Finger !!. There are many things that are changing in the area the studio is located in.and its looking very well for Memphis and the music biz, stayed tuned. . I would be glad to take anyone on a tour of this historic Landmark with a appointment  we are proud of what we do and represent  ... We have many displays of the great work from Onyx to American East , Easly McCain, The Barkays and wish all continued success. We have had many new projects that are coming in to American Recording Studio from world famous clients to bands or artists that want to record thier first song,,We also will refer clients to other studios in Memphis to help someone with a project to a reputable studio or producer that would be a good fit for them  .. We will also be expanding soon because clients are loving that this landmark was saved .I hope this helps for those who wonder about the name and anything else they might want to know..Don did return the name to Onyx in 1972 when Chips moved onto Nashville ..Don Crews memorial was held at the studio in 2016 by request of my friend Erick and his wonderful Mrs Betty Crews  , Its a sacred place of great honar of what all that has been accomplished by Don & Chips, we are sincere about being the caretakers of this Incredible studio and preserving all of the past and future Legacys

Welcome to this forum. I found your post to be interesting and informative, but I don't understand the portion quoted above. Care to elaborate? I read no negative comments. Actually when Terry (Compass Point) commented "Perfect time to be opening such a place there, so much music business to call upon." I personally find that to be a "positive" comment. Most of us have known each other for years and have nothing to hide behind. We "don't" know you, but would like to hear more if you could keep a positive attitude and share like everyone else does. You will find that PRW is not your typical forum. We cater to "all" grade levels with grace.

Re Grace

Thank you Chance for your comment , Soapfoot post are most kind and i respect freedom of speech . This was not a diatribe but a response of why its called ARS !  I will elaborate never liked the place / Fraught with problems and ineptitude from its inception ? Terible Location ? Grisantis Long gone ?  yes John Grisanti Passed away and we lost a great man and restaraunt .. Walgreens bought the property and the family did well.. I know Terry and respect his freedom of speech and his Talents a Gifted Engineer & Producer .. Thanks Brad, and welcome.

I can't speak for Terry, but I doubt he meant any real harm with his comments.

Nect time I'm back in the 901 I might enjoy having a look around and seeing what you've done with the place.

Cheers!

Thank you , Allen  Im greatful forr you posting the links on the studio , when you get to the 901 again , It would be great to meet you and show you the restoration of the studio and listen to some sessions that we have done .. I dont think Terry meant any harm either, because after all he its a forumn to freely talk . Im sure when he was there it did need much TLC to get it to standard that he is use to working with and Grisantis was a great loss  ..  .. Honestly we looked at using ONYX but the Name was already being used here in Memphis at the time and again Chips and Don were both on board with ARS.

Cheers !

Thanks Chance it is sad to say but many have closed , I am pleased to hear  down in Muscle shoals, Fame , Muscle Shoals sound studios and Nutthouse are staying busy with many A listt clents coming back to there roots .. Here in Memphis Phillips is starting to Boom again as well ,, it seems around the country that these historical rooms are seeing a renewed intrest from artists that do not have to push the buttons and keep up with the high cost of Avids new Pro Tools !2 subscription service and software and other preffered DAW and Interfaces .. studios now have to have very experinced computer or IT personal on staff ...

The "quote" function is no longer working here.

" studios now have to have very experinced computer or IT personal on staff "
Whats new is old. We used to maintain our analog machines constantly with our staff tech

There have been very few "purpose-built from the ground up" studios that I thought were all that good. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head were built by RCA Victor.

Lets see if the "quote function is working

Victor studios in Japan was amazing. I was there in 1971. Built from the ground up. I only wish I would have had the foresight to take pictures and notes.
