yes. i have used them multiple times. they do the job very well. both rack and floor toms. and they're cheap!

another option which surprised me recently: tlm103 on floor tom. i've done it a couple of times now on different sets. good balanced tone, no need for EQ. the output is hot, but i haven't heard the mic overload, and i liked it better than an 87, which is often where i go for floor. haven't tried them on racks yet.

I finally got a chance to try these mics out over the weekend and I was very pleasantly surprised. The toms sounded great.

Are you using one on each Tom? Do you EQ going into PT, or ITB?
I've got back to 421's on all Toms.

I've always been too concerned about getting my C-414's beaten on for Tom use.

In the past the MXL2003 (USA assembled versions) saw Tom service....
however after being winged by some less than accurate drummers in the past I had reservations about their use.

Fortunately I've recently had the pleasure of dealing with some real good drummers
who are really precise, and would have no issue putting 414's out.

Yes Mario, just one rack and floor. No EQ on the way in, and so far no obvious need for it. They're cheap enough so I'm not overly concerned about them getting hit, and I'm lucky to have good drummers around.

Seth, how is the cymbal bleed into these? In terms of sonic character, mainly.

That's the one thing I get funny about with tom spot mics. In something like a U87 it can actually be an asset to the cymbal sound in the right circumstances; with a 421 I find it to be an occasional liability in this regard.

Seth, what's the angle you're using ?

Are you off the edge, vertical and pointing toward the centre, or higher up(more horizontal) facing the centre?
I find if I try to mic up toms with condensers as I would dynamics I get a lot of cymbal bleed.

So I'll tend to back away a little and point down.
However it really depends on the drummer's style, tom itself (skin etc.) and musical style... imho
Correct me if I'm mistaken though.

I noticed your DW kit is way brighter than mine, but I'm using Vintage A skins now which have a
lot more "Meat" (bottom thud) than Clear Skins which resonate a lot more.

The mics are just slightly off of parallel to the heads, with the connector end slightly lower than the capsule. The chances are I'll wipe the tom tracks where the toms aren't playing anyway. I don't have a clue what kind of heads my kid has on the drums. The drums sound awfully good, though.

Agreed, that's the way I've miked toms with condensers.
I usually have 421's pointing more across to the centre.

But depends on the sound we're going for... ;)

Send me a clip and I'll send you mine ;)

I think I got a pair of seconds for peanuts because one of the labels had fallen off one of the mics. Mario, I'll send you a track.
