This was the first time I had ever heard an Upright bass live.
Everyone was impressed by the sound of the room and how well it recorded.
I think I used a PR40 and an NT5.

Incredible instument, so powerful.

The experiment.

Mono overhead (CS-1)
RE20 in the bass drum
Bass drum tunnel with a 4047 at the end.
57 on the snare.

The mistake I made was actually covering the bass drum shell.

Overhead was fantastic.

Also notice the nice new LatchLake stand, one of two.

Another try, this time with the RE20 inside and the TnC ACM2 ribbon outside.
Still making the mistake of covering the bass drum shell.
Live and learn.

Too much fun.

Very cool! I like the room, and the kick drum snuggie. lol
How did the ribbon sound out there?

-tidewater

That ribbon mic is quite impressive.
I find that in comparison with the 4047 which is the only other mic that I have tried outside the bass drum. The ACM 2 has more attack and whack, the 4047 has more low end thump.
So its whatever I am going for.
Recently I have been happy with just the RE20 inside.

Also, I am using the ACM 2 more and more for clean electric guitars and most recently for recording the Clavinet through the Bassman. Really nice full and punchy sound.

I am totally with you on one mic, and the RE20 is the good one. I am more likely to place a second mic on the beater side of the beater head as close as I can get it to the beater without becoming the beater head. Ouch!

I like your setup. Location isn't half bad either. :)

Experiment.

Could be dynamic, could be sdc. Wouldn't risk a ribbon there. RE15 perhaps?

Be sure to check "phase" between the inside and the beater mics, most likely the beater will require reversal.

That is unless you wired something backwards. Oops! Mind the time alignment as well!

A good omni can sound great all alone sticking up like a saddle horn between the drummer's legs even..

Drums are funnest.

Have you listened to the PR40 in the bass drum? Me and drummer boy around here did some experimenting a few months ago and the PR40 has been in there ever since.

Yes the PR40 was in the bass drum until the RE20 arrived.
Both inside and outside pointing in the hole. Both work great.
